Tell us something about your role?
It is completely a positive role. I am playing Ritik’s mother Yamini. She is a doting mother. Ritik is the apple of her eye and she will go to any extent to protect him and her family. My role isn’t inspired by Aruna Irani’s character. Pick any serial or film. A mother is always loving, caring and attached to her son. She is neither negative nor positive. A mother will always be attached to her son. It’s a weekend show which itself is happening for the first time. Ekta Kapoor is a trendsetter. Earlier when TV went through a monotonous phase Ekta was the one who revolutionized the small screen with drama and saas-bahu shows. Naagin will be a trendsetter too.
How is your equation with your co-actors?
I am fortunate to work with Santram Varma again who was the director of Kaahin Kissii Roz and Manish who was my brother in Kaahin Kissii Roz. It was like meeting the same team again. I wear a traditional look, with colourful gajras, blue gajra for blue saree and green for green saree. I look like a typical mother.
What got you back to Hindi small screen?
I was busy for four and a half year down south. I did the Tamil version of Saath Nibhana Saathiya. I did the role of Kokilaben. I was also the judge of a dance reality show. I am just done with another reality show India Got Talent in Malayalam. Although I was doing really well in South but I miss Mumbai. My father wanted me to be back. Then one fine day I got a call from Balaji Telefilms and I was on board.
How does it feel to be back with Balaji Telefilms?
When I had nothing to do, Balaji offered me Kaahin Kissii Roz. The entire industry said that I can play roles of either a sister or bhabi. I was deeply hurt and de-motivated by the tag of one film wonder. I just wanted a chance to prove myself and this is when Ekta Kapoor gave me Kaahin Kissii Roz. Initially after listening to the narration I was apprehensive of doing it. I had to play a business tycoon at the stage when I did not even know how many zeroes were there is 1 crore. She had complete faith in me. I credit my success to her conviction.
Are you happy with the way your career has shaped?
God has been very kind to me. Anyone I meet today asks where have you been, we miss you and we are happy you are back. I am overwhelmed with the response. The love of people has brought me back to the Hindi small screen. Being missed by the audience is my reward. I am blessed to be remembered even after so many years especially in today’s competitive world.
Do you personally believe in super natural powers?
I am a super natural freak. I can get into any room and feel the vibrations. I have experienced it too. I am a very modern lady and believe in science and technology but beyond this there is something which is not seen by the naked eye. You walk on the streets at 12 O clock in the night, one tree moves and you get scared. When you get scared you obviously believe. However much we say that we don’t believe in it or there is nothing like super natural power somewhere deep inside we do believe and get scared and the people who don’t believe in it talk the most.
